 सुहास पाटील हे नाव जागतिक विव्दान आणि उद्योजकांमध्ये आदराने घेतले जात असले तरी सर्वसामान्य मराठी घरांमध्ये क्वचितच माहित असेल.  सुहास पाटील यांचा जन्म एका मराठी कुटुंबात जमशेदपूर येथे १९४४ मध्ये झाला. वडील श्रीकृष्ण पाटील हे टिस्को (टाटा स्टील) मधील अभियंते. छोट्या सुहास ला वडिलांच्या प्रतिभेचा वारसा होता. सुहासने स्वतंत्र भारतात नव्याने स्थापन झालेल्या भारतीय प्राद्योगिकी संस्थान म्हणजे आयआयटी मधून पदवी मिळवून अमेरिकेच्या प्रथितयश एमआयटी कॉलेजमध्ये प्रवेश मिळवला. १९७० साली पीएचडी मिळवळी. त्यांनी १९८१ साली अमेरिकेच्या सॉल्ट लेक सिटी या शहरात पाटील सिस्टिम्स नावाची संगणकाचे सुटे भाग बनवणारी कंपनी काढली. आज ही कंपनी सिरस लॉजिक (Cirrus Logic) या नावाने ओळखली जाते. पावणेचार हजारापेक्षा जास्त पेटंट्स मिळवलेली हि कंपनी सिलिकॉन व्हॅलीतील प्रमुख कंपन्यांपैकी एक आहे. अशा या कर्तबगार सुहास चे वडील - श्रीकृष्ण पाटील हे आपल्या मुलासोबत राहण्यासाठी सत्तरच्या दशकात अमेरिकेत गेले. स्वतःच्या रेडिओ दुरुस्त करण्याच्या छंदाला आणखी पुढे नेत आपल्या लेकाच्या या घरी संगणक पहिल्यांदा शिकले. ज्या देश...

माझ्या दैनंदिन वापरातील या वस्तू मला अतिशय उपयुक्त वाटल्या. १. मच्छरांना हाकलण्यासाठी केमिकल वेपरायझजर इतकी वर्ष वापरत आलो. मला नेहमी वाटायचे की ही रसायने जी मच्छरांना नको असतात ती आपल्या शरीराला काही प्रमाणात का होईना हानिकारक असतील. पण त्याला पर्याय देखील नव्हता. मच्छरदाणी एकतर फार किचकट प्रकार. वर लावली की फॅन ची हवा देखील लागत नाही. मच्छरांना मारण्यासाठी रॅकेट देखील आहेच, पण ते घेऊन मच्छरांच्या मागे टेनिस खेळावे लागते. त्यामुळे नाईलाजाने का होईना, गुडनाईट, ऑल आऊट सारखे वेपरायझर्स महिन्यातून दोन वेळा आणून लावणे हाच पर्याय होता. घरात बाळ आल्यापासून गुडनाईट वेपरायझर वापरणे आणखी धोकादायक वाटू लागले होते. असे काही असेल का जेणेकरून या व्हेपरायझर पासून सुटका होईल, हे शोधताना मला खालील लॅम्प सापडला. याचे कार्य इलेक्ट्रिक रॅकेट सारखेच आहे पण निळ्या प्रकाशाकडे मच्छर स्वतःहून आकर्षित होऊन मरतात. मला तर घेण्यापूर्वी विश्वासच नव्हता. पण एक दोन दिवसातच याची उपयुक्तता कळली. आज दोन महिने झाले आम्ही घरात गुडनाईट किंवा ऑलआऊट आणले नाही. हा लॅम्प एका ठिकाणी लावून झोपले कि मच्छरांचा काहीही त्रास होत...

A few years ago, if anyone had asked me that they had a requirement of identifying objects from the photographs, I would have probably thought of computer vision to accomplish that. The accuracy of the result would be highly dependent on the image quality, orientation, and presence of other objects in the picture. I would have thought of building a complete dataset of the possible combinations and it would have taken me weeks to even get started on something like OpenCV. The Technology Well, Google seems to have understood the pain behind writing an application from scratch for the identification and classification of images. While looking for a solution for the image classification problem, I came across Google's Cloud Vision - A web service Google has developed for this particular problem. Teaching aging parents to use smartphones can be extremely beneficial as well as joyful. I bought my mother a smartphone when she had no idea how to use it. I was skeptical at first but she started slowly picking up the phonebook, reading SMS and downloading play store apps. The real moment of joy was when she started using WhatsApp and sent a few messages to me and my sister. I added her to our cousins' group and she became the first senior of our family to join the young group. She would send those annoying forwarded   good morning and good night messages. Later I taught her how to type Marathi and she got hold of it without too much effort. She types faster than I do now. She now makes video calls to my sister on her own.
