Selling You The Game Of Thrones

Following post is my response to a question on Quora - Can you convince me to start watching “Game of Thrones”?

Without knowing what kind of entertainment you like, it's hard to sell GoT to you.

I feel the most important reason to watch GoT is this - Just like any classic work in the history, it's becoming a cult and you will see people citing its dialogues, characters, and events everywhere. If you have seen the series, it becomes delightful to understand the context whenever someone quotes GoT. For example, a few years ago, even Barack Obama quoted GoT in the White House correspondents' dinner.

It's part of a culture now.

But, I will be honest. I had started watching GoT way before I had ever thought of missing the references.

It was hard to start. There were so many characters and backstories that I could have easily given up on GoT before the end of the first season itself. But the makers are super smart. They have made the series such that viewers wouldn't lose interest. They have used nudity and sex imagery strategically throughout the series. Once you get hold of the characters (or so you think) then it engulfs you in it.

Some of life's experiences cannot be gained when you are young, have had secured childhood. This series gives you a taste of dark aspects of people as well as situations.

It also has elements which make you question your beliefs, opinions and also intentions of people around you. Not to say that it makes you cynical, but more aware.

I never felt that it's a story of good vs bad. It's a story of how a series of events lead people to behave and do things the way they do. Since there are so many characters and they have been given enough time, we get to understand their intricacies.

It's hard to continuously admire or hate any of the characters in GoT. Of course, some characters are pure evil, but mostly you can relate to other characters. They sometimes show compassion, sometimes they betray trusts, they find an alliance in worst of the enemies and make enemies out of good ol’ friends.

Even though all this struggle is to own the most powerful seat of the fictional world, one can derive allegories in the personal life and events around as well.

Cinematic experience

If you are a fan of the historical, mythical genre, this is something you should not miss. The sets, costumes, locations are truly a piece of art. The team of GoT has shot this series in deserts, jungles, Arctics, palaces, and chateaus across Europe. VFX is so real that one cannot tell the difference. They have spared no expense to bring this world on screen.

I wouldn't say this is the greatest thing ever on TV. In my opinion, Breaking Bad scores much higher despite being on a much smaller scale than GoT, but as I said in the beginning, it's about your taste and choice of genre.
