मी मागच्याच आठवड्यात "एका तेलियाने" हे गिरीश कुबेरांचे पुस्तक वाचले. सौदी अरेबिया, व्हेनेझुएला, लिबिया, कुवेत, इराण इत्यादी तेलउत्पादक देशांचा २० व्या शतकातला संक्षिप्त इतिहास वाचायला आवडणार असेल तर तुमच्यासाठी हे चांगले पुस्तक आहे. पश्चिम आशियातल्या मागास टोळीवाल्या देशांमध्ये विसाव्या शतकातच्या सुरुवातीला खनिज तेल मिळाल्यानंतर तिथले झालेले बदल; अमेरिका, ब्रिटन, फ्रांस, सोविएट रशिया या तात्कालीन बड्या राष्ट्रांमध्ये या नवीन संपत्तीवर वर्चस्व मिळवण्यासाठी चालू असलेली रस्सीखेच; इस्राएल, पॅलेस्टिन, इजिप्त, लिबिया, सीरिया यांचा या खेळामध्ये केला गेलेला वापर, युद्ध, तह, हेरगिरी; ते तेल विकून मिळालेल्या अमर्याद संपत्तीचा उपभोग घेणारे शेख यांच्या अजब कहाण्या या पुस्तकात आहेत. पुस्तकाचा आवाका मोठा असला तरी त्यात क्लिष्टता नाही वाटली. आणि या पुस्तकाची सर्वात आवडलेली बाब म्हणजे या सर्व घटनांना एक हिरो देखील आहे. सौदी अरेबियाचा तेलमंत्री म्हणून कारकीर्द गाजवलेले झाकी यामानी हे या पुस्तकाचे नायक. अरब तेलावर पोसलेल्या पाश्चात्य विकसित देशांच्या तेल कंपन्यांना त्यांच्याच पद्धतीने वठणीव...

तुम्ही अलीकडे कोणते पुस्तक वाचले आणि त्याबद्दल तुमचा काय अभिप्राय आहे? मी २०१९ च्या मार्च महिन्यात डॉ प्रकाश आमटे जिथे कार्यरत आहेत अशा हेमलकसा लोकबिरादरी प्रकल्पाला भेट दिली. बाबा आमटे, त्यांची समाजासाठी आयुष्य अर्पण केलेली डॉ विकास आणि प्रकाश आमटे ही मुले, डॉ भारतीताई आणि मंदाकिनी या कर्तृत्ववान सुना, सेवापरायण परिवार आणि निष्ठावंत, सेवाखोर कार्यकर्ते याबद्दल माहिती नसणारी व्यक्ती विरळाच. (सेवाखोर हा बाबा आमटेंच्या एका कवितेत आलेला शब्द आहे. The one who cannot help but help) चंद्रपूर जवळचे आनंदवन आणि गडचिरोली च्या निबिड अरण्यातले हेमलकसा याबद्दल खूप काही सांगण्यासारखे आहे. ते कधीतरी दुसऱ्या पोस्ट मध्ये. डॉ प्रकाश आमटे यांच्या प्रकाशवाटा ही आत्मकथा मी तिथे जाण्याअगोदरच वाचली होती. तिथे गेल्यावर मी आणखी काही पुस्तके घेतली. त्यात डॉ प्रकाश आमटेंचे हेमलकसा येथील सहकारी आणि बाबा आमटेंसोबत बराच काळ व्यतीत केलेले विलास मनोहर यांची दोन पुस्तके होती. त्यातले नेगल हे पुस्तक मी लागोलाग वाचून काढले. नव्वद च्या दशकात शाळेत असताना हे पुस्तक आमच्या शाळेच्या ग्रंथालयात खूपच विद्यार्थीप्रिय होते....

As a child, my reading primarily consisted of short stories, comics, and articles in Diwali magazines, GK books, and mythology. However, I soon realized the stark difference between reading those materials and delving into a complete novel. This realization struck me at the age of 19, prompting me to venture into the global arena of literature. I made a conscious decision to read English novels instead of their Marathi translations, my mother tongue. While Marathi literature boasts a vast collection of quality works, I sought more than mere entertainment from books. I yearned to observe and experience the lives of people worldwide, while also honing my linguistic skills in other languages. Given that English serves as a professional language in India and many parts of the world, it seemed like the logical choice.
